National Cancer Institute

Jeff Shilling leads NCI IT which represents centralized and divisional IT staff. Jeff manages the IT infrastructure for the NCI enterprise, including the hardware, software, network, cloud and policies required to support NCI’s scientific and administrative activities. These services play a critical role in supporting and advancing the NCI mission.

Jeff started his career as a biologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He made the transition to IT, early on, enjoying the diverse and fast-paced work. He moved to sunny Research Triangle area in North Carolina to work for NIEHS and the NTP. Jeff has also worked at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and at the NCI’s Center for Cancer Research (CCR) as an associate director for clinical informatics.

Jeff grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and was the fourth child in a family of nine children. He believes his ability to manage complex and chaotic situations is due to his family and his Midwestern upbringing. Jeff focuses on all staff being part of the team, bringing their unique and diverse skills to bear and drive success.
